Mickey Mouse, the star of the Disney studios, was designed in 1928 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks to replace the character of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Inspired both by a house mouse that Walt Disney had adopted as a child and by the cartoon characters of the time, Mickey made his first appearance that same year in the short film "Steamboat Willie", where he played a sailor on a steamboat. Since that historic first appearance, Mickey Mouse has become Disney's icon, propelling the studios to international success.
