Historical context:
This gold St. John gulden was struck under Arnold of Egmond, Duke of Guelders (1423–1472). The obverse depicts Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of the coin and namesake of the denomination, while the reverse displays the arms of Guelders encircled by four additional shields. These coins circulated widely in the Low Countries during the 15th century, reflecting both the political ambitions of the duchy and the influence of contemporary gold coinage standards.
