Historical context:
This medal was struck in 1853 in the Papal States to commemorate the re-establishment of the Catholic episcopal hierarchy in the Netherlands by Pope Pius IX. It marked the end of a long period of suppression that began with the Reformation. The move caused political controversy in the Protestant-majority Netherlands, but was celebrated by Dutch Catholics. The medal was engraved by Belgian artist Léopold Wiener, one of the foremost medallists of his time.
