Belgium 1930 Bronze Medal – Winged Victoria by Marcel Rau / 100 Years of Kingdom
Obverse: Winged female figure (Victoria) floating right, head turned left, holding the Belgian royal crown aloft in her extended right hand and a laurel branch in her lowered left. In front, the Belgian royal arms. Artist signature “RAU” below.
Reverse: Nine barley ears arranged fan-like behind a sword planted in the ground. Flanking the hilt: the dates "1830" and "1930". A five-pointed star at right.
Historical Context:
This medal was issued to mark the centenary of the Kingdom of Belgium, founded in 1830. The obverse features a classical allegory of Victoria, symbolizing triumph and national continuity under the monarchy. The reverse, with the sword and barley, represents Belgium’s agricultural strength and the sacrifices made for independence. Designed by prominent sculptor Marcel Rau, it blends neoclassical symbolism with a stylized 20th-century execution.
