Although sometimes very small, silver coins still represented quite a lot of money. Not easily exchangeable, so difficult in daily use. Hence bronze coins were introduced, first in Sicily and quickly the rest of the Greek world followed. This was the first so-called fiduciairy money, where the value of the metal had no relation to the buying power of the coin, the nominal value.
