Roman Republic (Rome mint 79 BC.), moneyer Cnaeus Naevius Balbus. Denarius serratus (18-19 mm, 3,82 g), silver, axis irregular alignment ↑↗ (ca. 40°), . Obv.: Diademed head of Venus right, wearing earring and pearl necklace; S•[C] behind. Rev.: C•NÆ•BALB in exergue, Victory driving galloping triga right; CXXV[..] (control numeral) above. Crawford 382/1b ; Sydenham 769b ; BMCRR Rome 2926 ; Bab. Naevia 6 . good VF, mint luster in deeper and protected areas
For this type, Mr. Crawford found an estimate of 280 obverse dies and 311 reverse dies. The representation of the triga is rare in Gallic as Roman numismatics. On the obverse is not the head of Juno (as Grueber and Sydenham estimated). It is indeed the head of Venus. It is one of the most important shows of the Republic, made as part of the military operations Sulla must carry out in order to establish his power. (Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix; 138–78 BC), commonly known as Sulla, a Roman general and statesman of the late Roman Republic.) The control marks of the reverses at the right corners added in Latin alphabet numbering from I to CCXXX (1 to 230). The representation of the triga is rare on the coinage of the Republic and is found only for the denarius of Appius Claudius Pulcher minted in 111-110 BC. The designs was copied or imitated on this prototype by the Celts of the Danube area.
