A rare and lovely Equestian figure of the Toba Batak sub group, Indonesia, Sumatra, probably 19th. century, so an early piece.

Chieftain is riding the Naga Padoha, mythical animal, in beautiful hardwood and with the eyes of the chieftain and his vehicle made with small nails inserted. A stopper for a vessel containing magical portions or ritual poison.

Size: 14,8 cm. for the stopper itself, 16 cm. total.

Condition: Good Very fine and intact with fine patina and sound wood for the high age.

Ex. Very old Danish Private Collection of Holck Larsen and with a description label below the base, that dates to the 1st.part of the 20th. century.
