Seleucid Empire, Antiochos III, AR tetradrachm (28 mm, 16.92 g), circa 202-187 BC. ΔI mint, uncertain location in southern or eastern Syria. His diademed head right with elderly features/Apollo sitting left on omphalos, testing arrow and holding bow, king's name engraved over the arrow.
Wherever this mint was, they seemed to have major problems with engraving the reverse dies; the legend often ends up engraved over features of the devices. It seems possible that the dies were prepared in great haste at a mint without an established staff, and the devices were engraved by a gem engraver, another hand then did the lettering in a rather haphazard manner.
Better than very fine, old collection tone, residual lustre. Very rare, only one cited in SC; another on SC online, a few others known in commerce.
