Description:
Juan Luis Calvó Pascual, curator of the Barcelona Military Museum of Montjuich, is considered one of the main specialists in the field of decorations and Spanish portable weapons, with numerous works and articles to his extensive credit. Tireless and inexhaustible in his production, he has just published on his own account this new book that he has subtitled “Romantic reflection of 125 years of war history” and which joins the previous ones “Decorations of Spain, 1849-1975” (Barcelona 1975 ), “Crosses and Medals, 1807-1987” (Pontevedra 1987) and “83 Medals of foreign participation in the Spanish War 1936-39” (Barcelona 1997).
On this occasion, the author has proceeded to make his particular and emotional selection of those decorations, crosses and commemorative pieces, national and foreign, related to the History of Spain during that long period of time that exceeds the century, some of them closely linked to our naval history and that many of our sailors have flaunted on their chests.
The book, printed on good quality paper and presented in large format, is illustrated with 182 black and white photographs and drawings of the front and back sides of the rewards described, as well as two color plates reproducing 86 award ribbons. .
After a brief preamble, where the author confesses his attraction to the subject he addresses and expresses his gratitude to those who preceded him in this work, he proceeds chronologically to detail the 86 rewards that he has selected on this occasion.
Among those of greatest naval interest, the “Commemorative Medal of SS.MM. by Levante” which was granted and gifted by Queen Isabel II to the crews of the squadron anchored in May 1858 in Alicante and which took them to Valencia; the “Medal of the bombardment of El Callao”, intended for the crews of the ships that made up the squadron commanded by Méndez Núñez that bombarded the artillery plaza of El Callao on May 2, 1866; the “Medal commemorating the circumnavigation of the frigate Numancia”, awarded to its crew for being the first armored ship to circumnavigate the world between February 4, 1865 and September 20, 1867; the “Medal commemorating the trip to Spain of H.M. Amadeo I”, on the back of which the frigates Numancia, Villa de Madrid and Victoria are reproduced, to whose crews it was delivered for the voyage made in December 1870 between Genoa and Cartagena, bringing the king consort; or the “Medals commemorating the combats of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba” awarded to the survivors of Rear Admiral Montojo's squadron in the combat fought on May 1, 1898 against Commodore Dewey's squadron and to the survivors of Admiral Cervera's squadron in the combat that took place on July 3, 1898 against Admiral Sampson's squadron.
Likewise, among the foreign decorations, it is worth highlighting the chapter dedicated to the various North American decorations, created on the occasion of the war waged against Spain in 1898 over our overseas territories.
In summary, we are faced with a work of great interest and usefulness, both for experts and amateurs, which must also occupy its corresponding place in the library of those interested in our military and naval history.
