Preface:
Numismatics, says M. Sabatier, cannot be denied that it is a true passion; but a noble passion, pleasant and useful for its effects, since it predisposes our spirit to work and study and purifies feeling and taste, warding off boredom, which is the worst enemy of the human race.
Accepting the definition of the great master, I will say that, carried away by that passion, from a very young age I dedicated myself with more assiduity and eagerness than knowledge, to collecting and trying to collect old coins of any series they were, but always giving my preference to the Roman imperials.
This series, despite my lack of preparation, seduced me; He found in it the means of possessing the portraits of the Roman emperors and their families; of the Caesars, forming an admirable iconographic series, not only from the historical and archaeological point of view common to all classical series, but also from the artistic point of view, especially during the High Empire.
The reverses, with their immense variety, made me aware of the most notable facts of Roman civilization; the most important events. In religion, their gods, their sacrifices; in the military, his triumphs, his conquests; In civil matters, its foundations, its buildings, the entire life, in short, of the Roman Empire; and it recreated me, it interested me, it made me live another time.
I only needed a treatise to serve as a guide; But since there was none published in Spanish, I had to content myself with the information that the kindness of competent people provided me, in the hope of later being able to acquire the great foreign works of numismatics, always rare and at high prices.
More than thirty years have passed since then; During them I have become fully convinced that the lack of a treatise on imperial Roman numismatics has not only prevented the growth of such a cultured hobby, but has discouraged and discourages many amateurs in their principles. To do? Should I leave my favorite numismatic series without a treatise, or should I write it myself? In truth, I don't know what will be the worst; but... that "between two evils, the lesser" comes to mind, and in this case, the lesser may be writing it and publishing it, because, even if it does not completely fulfill the purpose that I propose with it, it will be For me a great triumph, if it at least serves as a stimulus for another to do with more titles, and greater competence, what I may have intended with better intention than ingenuity.
