Burgundy. Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1467–1477). Undated Cast Portrait Medal, after a Model of circa 1474 Traditionally Attributed to Giovanni di Candida.
Portrait medal depicting Charles the Bold in the manner of a Roman ruler. The reverse combines the ram of the Golden Fleece with Burgundian fire steels and sparks.
The original model is traditionally associated with the siege of Neuss in 1474–1475. The casting date of the present specimen has not been established.
Obverse: Laureate head of Charles the Bold facing right.
Legend: DVX KAROLVS BVRGVNDVS — “Charles, Duke of Burgundy.”
Reverse: A recumbent ram between two fire steels, accompanied by flints and sparks, within a wreath. The fire steels bear the inscriptions AVREVM and VELLVS, referring to the Golden Fleece.
Inscription above and below: IE LAI EMPRINS / BIEN EN AVIENGNE — “I have undertaken it; may good come of it.”
Artist of the original model: Traditionally attributed to Giovanni di Candida.
