Netherlands. Geuzen Beggar’s Medal of Philip II, Dated 1567, with Three Pendant Bowls
After the design of Jacques Jonghelinck. Maker and date of manufacture undetermined.
Obverse: Bust of Philip II facing left, wearing a high collar, with the date 1567 below the bust. Partially legible surrounding inscription, corresponding to the type legend EN TOVT FIDELLES AV ROY.
Reverse: Two clasped hands extending through a beggar’s bag. Partially legible surrounding inscription, corresponding to the type legend IVSQVES A PORTER LA BESACE.
Oval medal with four attachment loops, an upper suspension ring and three separately suspended miniature begging bowls. The pendant bowls have losses to their rims.
The design originates in the Netherlandish nobles’ movement of 1566, whose members adopted the name Geuzen, or “Beggars”. The begging bag and bowl became emblems of the movement. This example bears the date 1567; its actual date of manufacture, and that of the attached bowls, have not been established.
Weight: 6.2 g.
Recorded size: 24 mm. Overall dimensions including the pendant bowls are not recorded.
Type comparison: Rijksmuseum, collection no. NG-2019-538, a related example dated 1567 without the three pendant bowls.
