Netherlands. (1921). Dante Alighieri — 600th Anniversary of his Death. Bronze Portrait Plaquette by Chris van der Hoef. Jintes/Pol 67; Koninklijke Begeer II, 166.
Bronze. Rectangular, 70.6 × 46.5 mm, height × width. Uniface.
Obverse: Stylised bust of Dante Alighieri facing right, wearing his characteristic head covering and a laurel wreath. Inscription DANTE ALIGHIERI below; faint artist’s monogram in the upper left field.
Reverse: Plain.
Designed by C.J. “Chris” van der Hoef for the 1921 commemoration of the six-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death in 1321. The plaquette itself is undated.
This design was discussed and illustrated during the artist’s lifetime in Elseviers Geïllustreerd Maandschrift (1925). The contemporary account explicitly dates it to 1921 and cites the Dante portrait as evidence of Van der Hoef’s skill in portrait modelling.
Approximately Extremely Fine, with brown patina, light rubbing, minor spots and surface marks. Fine scratches on the plain reverse and a small edge nick. Please examine the photographs for your own assessment.
