Obverse: Eight-line Dutch inscription commemorating the victory over Bossu in the Zuiderzee: “11 OCTOBER 1573 / DOOR LOVTER GHEWELT / VAN MENICHEN HELT / DER VRIE WESTVRIESCHE NATIE / WERD BOSSU GEVELT / DIT HIER GESTELT / TOT LOFTEKEN VAN / GODS GRATIE / 1620.” The inscription is partly weak and worn on this specimen.

Reverse: Naval battle scene in the Zuiderzee, with ships in combat and a coastal landscape in the background, including the views of Hoorn and Enkhuizen. On this specimen the battle scene is very heavily worn and partly obscured by surface deposits, but traces of the original composition remain visible.

Historical context: The medal commemorates the Battle of the Zuiderzee of 11 October 1573, in which the States’ fleet defeated the Spanish fleet under Maximilien de Hénin-Liétard, Count of Bossu. The type was issued by C. Wijntges and is known in silver; a lead example dated 1620 is also recorded in the Münzkabinett der Universität Göttingen.
