Historical Context:
J. J. Hool-Nollet was an antiquair in Rotterdam who operated an antiquities shop for several decades. Contemporary newspaper sources describe her as the proprietor of a small antiquities business dealing in furniture, curiosities and artworks. This small silver piece was likely issued as a promotional or commemorative token connected with her shop. The obverse portrait depicts Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968), the American civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 1964, whose international recognition after the 1960s led to numerous commemorative objects and medals.
