Belgium – Blankenberge, Fish of the Year “Schar” – Twee Daagse van Vlaanderen, undated
Obverse: Image of a plaice (schar) with two seals above, swimming in the sea. Around: “TWEEDAAGSE VAN VLAANDEREN – BLANKENBERGE – VIS VAN HET JAAR – SCHAR.”
Reverse: Textured honeycomb-like pattern without inscription.
Historical Context:
This bronze medal was issued for the Tweedaagse van Vlaanderen in Blankenberge, a recurring cultural and gastronomic event on the Belgian coast. Each year, a specific fish species was chosen as “Fish of the Year,” in this case the schar (plaice), an abundant North Sea flatfish. The obverse design, featuring both the fish and seals, symbolises the connection between the sea, local fishing traditions, and coastal wildlife. The reverse was left undecorated apart from a textured pattern, suggesting the medal was produced as a commemorative souvenir rather than a prize piece. Such medals are representative of post-war Belgian regional festivities, which often promoted local culinary heritage alongside tourism.
