Belgium c.1950 Bronze Medal – King Baudouin by G. Van Dionant / Laurel Wreath & Monogram
Obverse: Bareheaded portrait of a young King Baudouin facing left. Artist’s signature G. VAN DIONANT below the truncation.
Reverse: Stylized laurel wreath encircling a crowned capital letter "B" at bottom center. Blank central field, intended for possible engraving.
Historical Context:
This uninscribed bronze medal was issued circa 1950, marking the early reign of King Baudouin of Belgium (1930–1993), who ascended the throne in 1951 after the abdication of his father, Leopold III. The youthful portrait and the presence of a simple monogram on the reverse reflect a formal but restrained royal aesthetic. Medals of this type were often used as honorary or official tokens for civic or military occasions.
