Historical context
This medal was awarded to Jean Sébastien Guillaume Wypels, a legal scholar and professor of criminal law in Liège, in honor of his 50-year academic career. The tribute, inscribed in French, highlights his distinction as le criminaliste – a specialist in criminal jurisprudence. The medallist J. Geerts, known for commemorative portrait medals in Belgium, rendered the likeness with great realism and sensitivity. Such medals were typically presented in academic or ceremonial contexts as a sign of high esteem.
