Countermark PM for Portugese Mozambique in front of the empress.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Portuguese Mozambique countermarked

Indian rupees (often Queen Victoria issues) with the letters “PM” to make them legal

tender locally. The “PM” stood for Portuguese Mozambique and helped distinguish

authorized coins from other foreign rupees circulating in East Africa. This practice

reflected the widespread use of Indian rupees in regional trade and the colony’s

effort to assert monetary control.
