Ludwig (Louis) II was born on 13 April 1229, a son of Otto II of Bavaria and Agnes of the Palatine he was the great-grandson of Henry the Lion of Saxony. In 1246, he supported his brother Conrad IV of Germany against Henry Raspe′s usurpation. In 1253, he succeeded his father, Otto II, to become Duke of Upper Bavaria and Count Palatine of the Rhine. In 1255 he divided the Wittelsbach lands with his brother, Henry XIII. Louis retained Upper Bavaria and the Palatinate, while Henry received Lower Bavaria.
Louis II, Duke of Bavaria, contracted his first marriage to Maria of Brabant, daughter of the late Henry II, Duke of Brabant, and his wife Marie of Swabia, on 2 August 1254 in Landshut. Maria, born around 1226, was approximately three years older than Louis, who had ascended as duke the previous year following the death of his father, Otto II. The union produced no children during its brief duration. His first marriage ended in tragedy. On 18 January 1256, Louis II ordered the beheading of his wife, Maria of Brabant, at Castle Mangoldstein in Donauwörth, Bavaria, on suspicion of adultery with a knight. The accusation stemmed from Louis′s interpretation of a letter Maria had written, which he believed indicated infidelity during his absence on state affairs two of her ladies-in-waiting were also executed alongside her. Maria, aged approximately 30, was buried in the Church of the Cross in Donauwörth. To atone for the act, he founded the Fürstenfeld Abbey.
Louis and his brother Henry XIII of Bavaria repelled Ottokar II of Bavaria′s 1257 invasion, and he was banned by the pope in 1266 for supporting Conradin and the House of Hohenstaufen. In 1268, he inherited some of Conradin′s possessions in Swabia after he was executed by Charles of Anjou, and he supported Rudolf I of Germany′s election. On 26 August 1278, he assisted Rudolf at the Battle on the Marchfeld, where Ottokar was killed. Louis died in 1294, and Rudolf I of Bavaria succeeded him. His other son Louis would become Louis IV of Germany in 1313.
