Duke George of Saxony was appointed Stadtholder of all Frisian lands by Emperor Maximilian I in 1498, so Groningen also fell under this purview. However, this was refused by the city of Groningen, which found itself compelled to seek external aid and protection to withstand the growing pressure from the Habsburgs. After all, the Saxon dukes in neighboring Friesland constituted a significant threatening power. Consequently, in 1506, Count Edzard of East Frisia was inaugurated as Lord of Groningen. Shortly thereafter, a joint minting was initiated, of which this coin is an example. Edzard′s ambitions, however, were greater, and he also focused on the western territories of Friesland that were under the administration of Stadtholder George of Saxony. With an army consisting of 24 German dukes and counts, he invaded the Frisian lands and caused widespread destruction there. Edzard was declared an outlaw (Reichsacht) by the Emperor. A struggle followed that would last three years (1514-1517), during which Edzard was pushed back to his own territory in East Frisia, where many villages and towns were destroyed. For example, the city of Aurich was completely razed to the ground. In the three-year struggle, Edzard ultimately managed to retain control of the greater part of East Frisia. Only when Emperor Charles V came to power in the Netherlands did Edzard succeed in securing clemency and being granted East Frisia. The city of Groningen had by then (in 1514) declined Edzard′s patronage and exchanged his role for the no less warlike anti-Burgundian, Charles of Egmont, Duke of Gelre.
