Apulian Red-Figure Bell Krater with Banquet Scene, ca. 4th Century BC. The krater is decorated with two principal figural scenes. The first depicts three standing male figures engaged in conversation, rendered in a relatively restrained manner with simplified details of their hair and drapery. The more elaborate scene depicts a banquet scene, with three reclining male figures arranged around a dining couch. The two outer figures are bearded and each raises a kylix in the act of drinking. The central figure is attended by a servant who pours wine into his cup. The figure at right holds a beaded necklace in his raised left hand, while clusters of grapes enliven the upper portions of the composition. Beneath the handles, on either side, are palmettes. The figural scenes are framed below by a geometric band and above, beneath the rim, by a continuous ivy pattern. Professionally restored, with evidence of an earlier repair dating to the mid-20th century. Provenance: Ex Frank Kovacs Collection, acquired in the 1990s; subsequently from the Cederlind Estate; Private Collection, Chicago. H. 12 3/4" Dia. 12 7/8" (32.4 cm x 32.7 cm)..
