25¢, 2000-MS66, Struck on Elliptical Planchet, PCGS. An unusual and visually dramatic mint error, this piece was struck on a planchet that was improperly cut into an elliptical shape rather than the standard circular format. The distorted geometry results in uneven metal flow during striking, often producing areas of weakness opposite zones of heavy expansion. Depending on collar engagement, the rim may be partially formed while other portions taper or spread irregularly. Elliptical planchets typically originate from a misfeed through the blanking press or from improperly aligned punch-and-die cutting equipment, creating a stretched or oblong blank before it ever reaches the coining chamber. When struck, the design conforms to this abnormal shape, giving the coin a distinctly “pulled” appearance while still retaining clear device detail. Errors of this nature are scarce and highly collectible, combining strong visual appeal with a clear and understandable mechanical cause within the minting process.
