25¢, 1998-MS66, Reverse Die Cap, NGC.A reverse die cap occurs when a struck coin adheres to the reverse die and stays fixed through repeated strikes. As additional planchets are struck beneath it, the stuck coin expands, flares outward, and forms a hollow, cap-like shape. The piece often becomes a broad, distorted, out-of-collar strike with the reverse design stretched and the obverse increasingly obliterated.
