Obverse : Tête laurée d’Arès (Mars) à droite, les cheveux courts ; derrière la tête, un minuscule casque ; grènetis circulaire perlé
Reverse : Taureau chargeant à gauche ; (grènetis circulaire perlé)
Commentary : Monnaie centrée. Revers agréable. Usure importante mais régulière. Patine vert foncé
FR : Arès (Mars) est le dieu de la guerre. Lui est associé un symbole militaire (casque) qui rappelle les visées belliqueuses des nouveau maîtres de Messine. Pour ce type G. Buceti a relevé vingt-et-un exemplaires pour deux variétés avec des poids compris entre 7,02 g et 9,95 g. C’est le premier monnayage des Mamertins caractérisé par le coin avec le petit casque derrière la tête appartenant à la série I du groupe IV B du classement de Särström. Ce type avec la légende placée en haut en bas du revers semble plus rare
EN : Ares (Mars) is the god of war. He is associated with a military symbol (helmet) that recalls the warlike aims of the new masters of Messina. For this type G. Buceti noted twenty-one examples for two varieties with weights between 7.02 g and 9.95 g. This is the first coinage of the Mamertines characterized by the die with the small helmet behind the head belonging to series I of group IV B of the Särström classification. This type with the legend placed at the top and bottom of the reverse seems rarer.
