EN : Universal suffrage consists of the recognition of the right to vote for all citizens. It is defined in contrast to restricted suffrage, which reserves the right to vote for certain citizens, in particular to census-based suffrage or to suffrage based on capacity. It is the expression of popular sovereignty and the general will in a democratic regime. In its modern version, it is individualized, that is to say, it is carried out according to the principle of one person = one vote, unlike plural voting or family voting.
