View of the city of Mainz under the French bombardment., Phaeton, symbol of France, struck down by an eagle, symbol of the Empire., Graded NGC MS60, the word Siege on the slab is misspelled. "Mainz, return of the city to the Empire and expulsion of the French", by Philippe Heinrich Müller. The siege of Mainz was an episode in the war of the League of Augsburg. In 1685, when the last Elector of the Palatinate Charles II died without an heir, Louis XIV used the marriage of his brother Philippe d'Orléans to the Elector's sister as a pretext to claim several territories in the Palatinate. In 1688, he invaded the left bank of the Rhine from Alsace to Cologne and, following his famous slogan "Burn down the Palatinate", towns such as Heidelberg, Worms and Speyer were transformed into a heap of ruins. That same year, French troops arrived in Mainz. Despite the city's fortifications, Archbishop Anselme-François of Ingelheim preferred to capitulate, with only a garrison of 800 militiamen to face the 20,000 French soldiers. Mainz fell to the French for the first time. In 1689, the relief armies of the Holy Roman Empire commanded by Duke Charles V of Lorraine only reached the city on June 16. French governor Jacques Henri de Durfort valiantly defended the fortress of Mainz. The city was liberated after three months of siege and bombardment on September 8, 1689, a fact commemorated by our medal. On the obverse, the caption reads "Mainz, snatched from the Empire by the bad faith of the French, was reunited with it by the valour of the Germans", and on the reverse, the caption is taken from Ovid: "He will stop fire with fire"., MOGVNTIACVM* // GALLORVVM FRAVDE EREPTVM VIRTVS GERMANORVM RESTITVIT A·1689, COMPESCET IGNIBVS IGNES / INCENDIT QVACVNQVE INCEDIT NGC Zertifikats-Nummer: 6141732-003
