A satirical medal based on Napoleon III's centimes, a particular target for satire. Our medal begins with the emperor smoking, wearing a Prussian spiked helmet and a necklace attached to a chain bearing the inscription Sedan, the battle he lost and which put an end to the Second Empire and his reign. His epithet is the pejorative word "miserable", while the number of prisoners captured at the Battle of Sedan is indicated below. On the reverse, the head of the imperial eagle and the thunderbolt are replaced respectively by an owl and a cannon resting on bones, certainly those of soldiers who died in the battle. The word "Empire" has been replaced by "Vampire", which is phonetically close and refers to a monstrous creature. Finally, the dates of his reign - from his coup d'état to his defeat at Sedan" - are inscribed below, underlining his end.
