Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear., Athena seated left, holding Nike, crowning the king's name, in her right hand and leaning with her left arm on shield decorated with grain ear; trophy (?) on the throne; behind, transverse spear., A variety that is apparently unknown and yet unpublished. An extremely rare type with this grain ear on the shield and what appears to be a trophy against the throne. Other varieties are known, with monograms as well as symbols in the left field, under the outstretched hand (Leu Numismatik, Web Auction 17, 2021, 280; Web Auction 81, 2021, 274), but such a specimen remains for the moment the only one known in sales and the symbol under the throne (possibly a military trophy) is not referenced in the HGC 3.2 list. Variety of the highest rarity. An specimen with some flats, the striations on the horn have disappeared, but the obverse and reverse remain in excellent condition, particularly Athena with her face still visible.
