HEROD ARCHELAUS AE half prutah. Ethnarch of Judaea, Jerusalem mint 4 BC - 6 AD. H P W (counterclockwise from below), prow of galley left. Reverse - EΘN (Ethnarch), surrounded by wreath. Hendin 6228, RPC I 4916. 14mm, 1.2g.
Herod Archelaus was the elder son of Herod the Great. After Herod I's death, his titles passed to his younger son Herod Antipas. Displeased by this turn of events, Archelaus took a galley to Rome and appealed the outcome to the Senate of Rome, where he was awarded the title of Ethnarch of Judaea along with the lion's share of his father's holdings. The galley's appearance on this issue no doubt refers to Archelaus' voyage to Rome. This event is also written as one of Jesus' parables, in the Gospel of Luke (19)
