Kings of Macedon. Lampsakos. Alexander III "the Great" 336-323 BC. Posthumous issue, Lampsacus, ca. 310-301 BC. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus seated left on backless throne, right leg drawn back, feet on ground line, eagle outstretched in right hand, grounded scepter in left; KI monogram in left field, ME monogram below throne. Price 1406. Produced at the important mint of Lampsacus between circa 310 and 301 BC, this drachm belongs to the mature posthumous coinage of Alexander the Great, struck during the height of the Wars of the Diadochi. Although Alexander had been dead for over a decade, his coinage remained the dominant international currency of the eastern Mediterranean, trusted by merchants and armies alike. His successors deliberately retained his name and imagery to reinforce their own legitimacy while competing for control of his empire. Situated on the Hellespont, Lampsacus occupied a strategically vital position linking Europe and Asia and served as one of the principal Macedonian mints in northwestern Asia Minor. The KI and ME monograms identify the officials or production series responsible for this emission, reflecting the highly organized administrative system developed under the Successors. Coins such as this circulated widely across the Hellenistic world, bearing witness to the enduring economic and political legacy of Alexander long after his death.
